Jeremiah Chiu Expands US Tour, Shares New Single / Video “In Visibility”
Edge Conditions Out October 9
Today, Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Jeremiah Chiu presents “In Visibility,” the second single and video from his forthcoming album, Edge Conditions, available on LP, CD, and digital download October 9 (and on streaming platforms October 27). In conjunction, he announces additional dates for his fall US tour, including shows in Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, and more.
Still from “In Visibility” video, directed by Jeremiah Chiu
Following Edge Conditions’ lead single “Plastic Mind / Elastic Machines,” today’s single “In Visibility” is a spaced-out cruiser of a tune and a perfect example of Chiu’s use of industrial-sounding texture to create an almost humanlike sense of pulse and breath. The track eases in with soulfully abstract drip-drop melodies, quickly and smoothly enveloped by a laid-back West Coast rhythm. Chiu comments: “‘In Visibility’ was written with the Art of Noise in mind, whom I love. I always get the sense that they’re having fun. Their music is all incredibly dialed in, but there’s a lightness to it—serious play.”
“In Visibility” arrives alongside a video directed and edited by Chiu. The video was shot by throwing an iPhone into the air while recording in slow motion. The video’s simple message, “Throw your phone away,” results in a painterly abstract visual as the world spins, twirls, and tilts in disorienting fashion. Chiu adds: “And, no, I’m not worried about the phone getting destroyed. In fact, it might be my subconscious saying, ‘please, please get off this f**ing device.’”*

Edge Conditions
Following three electro-acoustic duo albums with violist Marta Sofia Honer (one in collaboration with late legend of minimalist music Ariel Kalma) and three heavily fused trance-jazz LPs with his quintet SML (including Spontaneous Music Live, which was named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork just a couple months ago), Edge Conditions settles Jeremiah Chiu into a world of densely layered, tightly composed electronic music deviations in the vein of YMO spinoffs, Arthur Russell 12-inch mixes, Yasuaki Shimizu, classic Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Art of Noise. There’s an emotional, energetic arc here—a shining display of Chiu’s range and depth as both a composer and producer in which every facet of his collaborative work and sonic personality feels represented.
The album was mostly written and recorded during February and March of this year. Chiu operated both in isolation and with a select team of musical comrades, while also incorporating live collaborations, field recordings, and audio sketches going back years. Collaborators include Marta Sofia Honer (viola), Booker Stardrum (drums), Ben Lumsdaine (drums and percussion), Patrick Shiroishi (saxophone and field recordings), Takako Minekawa (vocals and field recordings), Marquis Hill (trumpet), and Will Miller of Resavoir (EVI).
Edge Conditions is the first full-frame look at Chiu as a composer. Here, one of the most exciting artists in Los Angeles and a subtly groundbreaking new voice in contemporary music across the globe finally steps fully into the spotlight.
