โNinthsโ
Digital Single Out Now
โNinths,โ an extra piece from the Mighty Vertebrate sessions previously only available on the Japanese CD edition, is out today on all digital music platforms worldwide.
The track kicks into gear with a gritty, almost post-punk-sounding electric guitar figure from Gregory Uhlmann before the woozy and rhythmic drum kit of Ben Lumsdaine enters to drag the listener along in polyrhythm. Butterssโs longtime collaborator and comrade Josh Johnsonโs alto sax holds down the almost synth-like primary melody while drones and chirps build up in the periphery. โNinthsโ almost sounds like Pornography-era Robert Smith went to jazz school and reconfigured the OG Ocarina of Time soundtrack.

Mighty Vertebrate
โA jazz-inflected melange of styles, from lo-fi hip-hop to slow-burn post-rockโฆ Mighty Vertebrate proves that Butterss can thrive in whatever world they find themself in.โ โ Pitchfork
โCerebral, groovy and beyond categorization.โ โ The Guardian (4 Stars)
โA playful fusion that represents the bassistโs deep sense of adventure and vision.โ โ Alternative Press
โFlexing their expertise for more subdued arrangements to round out the multi-talented artistโs CV, proving once again that range is where Butterss thrives, quite healthily.โ โ Treble Zine
โMighty Vertebrate feels like that classic statement-from-an-artist album.โ โ Molars
โConstructed with maximum intentionality.โ โ The Needle Drop
Originally released in fall 2024, Mighty Vertebrate is the International Anthem debut from Anna Butterss.
On Mighty Vertebrate, Butterss convenes a group of trusted longtime collaborators to bring their compositions to fruition: Ben Lumsdaine (drums, guitar, production), Josh Johnson (sax), and Gregory Uhlmann (guitar), plus a smoking guest appearance from Jeff Parker.
The breadth and scope of the results might have been difficult to achieve otherwise. From the Robbie-Shakespeare-in-groove-mode intro to the album opener โBishopโ to the spacious cinematic doom of โSeeing You,โ there is a lot to wrangle into one cohesive concept. On Mighty Vertebrate, Butterss and crew do just that.
2026 reissue available on new, limited edition Skull color vinyl, shipping and in stores NOW.

Lados B
With Anna Butterss & Jeff Parker
On October 15 and 16, 2020, drummer Daniel Villarreal was joined by guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss for two afternoons of recording in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles. For all three musicians, it was the first ensemble recording session theyโd done in person since the pandemic locked the world down just seven months prior. Some choice moments from these sessions made it onto Villarrealโs critically acclaimed 2022 album Panamรก 77, but most of the music remained unreleased.
Lados B is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music made by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days in 2020. Villarreal is heard leading the group through various rhythmic modes and structures for improvisation โ flow as informed by the Latin funk of Fania Records as it is by the otherworldly humanity trance of Brain Records โ while Parker and Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing free together (as heard on their ETA IVtet LPs) to build harmonic buoys for their spontaneous melodicism. The result is a beautifully vivid illustration of context, creativity, and collective composition from a particularly rich moment in history.
2026 reissue available on new, limited edition Expired Film color vinyl, shipping and in stores NOW.
