Episode 1 of Charles Stepney: Out of the Shadows

Episode One follows Charles Stepney into his basement studio on the South Side Chicago, where he workshopped, recorded, and created much of the music that would become gold & platinum selling hits, and even more music that would never see the light of day. It features interviews and testimonies from members of Earth, Wind & Fire, Terry Callier, the Dells, and Stepney’s daughters Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté (aka the Stepney Sisters).

Directed/photographed/edited by: Brian Ashby

Episode 2: Out of the Shadows

"The Next Plane"

Wax Poetics presents the second episode of Charles Stepney: Out of the Shadows – a four part web series directed by Chicago documentarian Brian Ashby (known for his work on Scrappers, The Area, Harry Who & The Chicago Imagists, and a forthcoming film about Damon Locks and Black Monument Ensemble).

Episode 3: Out of the Shadows

Where Episode One of the Wax Poetics series shed light on Stepney at work in his basement studio on the Southside Chicago and Episode Two highlighted the circumstances around Stepney’s death in 1976, the focus of Episode Three – "Legacy" – is the opaque entanglement of Stepney's rights and royalties that his family has inherited and struggled with for decades, as well as the present movements being made by his daughters (Eibur, Charlene and Chanté) to clear things up and transform the immense pain of that struggle into a celebration of their father's work.

Episode 4: Out of the Shadows

“Out of the Shadows: Vol. 4” of the Wax Poetics series on Charles Stepney beautifully documents the musical journey of Rotary Connection 222 throughout the Summer of Stepney. It is truly an honor to lead the amazing collective that is Rotary Connection 222, and we will unceasingly continue to uplift the legacy of the great Charles Stepney." - Junius Paul
