ATALAYA is new work by bassist Dezron Douglas, and it is alive. That is, ‘alive’ in all the ways that jazz is at its best – as a pure and personal expression of Black Music channeled through time-honored traditions by a group of musicians who practice sonic coherence through musical unity. As Dezron puts it in the opening statement of his liner notes for the album: “Mysticism, Magic, Faith, Love, Power, Discernment! These are words that embody the creative process of Music.”

It's been one month since we lost our beloved sister, friend, inspiration, and pillar of our label’s artistic ethos, jaimie branch. It’s difficult to find the right words to capture this devasting loss for our community. We will come together through music, poetry and art to heal, share some light and celebrate the gifts of such a rare individual.

Today we are happy to share another piece of music from Carlos Niño & Friends' forthcoming double LP EXTRA PRESENCE. " Thandi Piano EDIT (from 080619, with additions)" is aptly named for the track's pianist, Thandi Ntuli, whose beautiful, hypnotic key cascades and mantric melodies hover over subtle sonic flourishes from Niño and Nate Mercereau.

Today, we are proud to share details of Step on Step, a double LP collection of home recordings marking the eponymous debut album by enigmatic producer, arranger, and composer Charles Stepney (1931-1976), out on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital September 9th 2022. The music that makes up Step on Step was created by Stepney alone, in the basement of his home on the Southside of Chicago, sometime in the late 1960s and early 1970s, before his untimely death in 1976.
