The 11th and final IA11 Edition LP: Makaya McCraven's Universal Beings

Makaya McCraven
Universal Beings
(IA11 Edition)

Today we are proud to share details for the eleventh and final reissue in our IA11 Editions series, Makaya McCraven's Universal Beings, available for preorder on vinyl 2xLP now, in stores December 5th, 2025.

The original 2018 release of Universal Beings, in many ways, feels like the moment that the gates swung open for both Makaya and International Anthem. On one hand, it's a four-sided communal showcase of the inter-city exchange that had started to develop in the “new jazz” hubs, collecting group improvisations from New York, London, Chicago, and Los Angeles. On the other, it is an editing and post-production masterclass – the MVP of McCraven’s “organic beat music” concept – and a landmark moment where his cut-splice-reassembly chops shine as brightly as the players themselves.

The musicians on the album were a combined who’s-who and who’s-gonna-be-who of their respective scenes: Brandee Younger (harp), Joel Ross (vibraphone), Tomeka Reid (cello), Dezron Douglas (double bass), Shabaka Hutchings (tenor saxophone), Junius Paul (double bass), Nubya Garcia (tenor saxophone), Ashley Henry (Rhodes piano), Daniel Casimir (double bass), Josh Johnson (alto saxophone), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (violin), Jeff Parker (guitar), Anna Butterss (double bass), and Carlos Niño (percussion). In our original press release, we called it “an inspiring display of the organic global inter-connectedness of the Black American music tradition in 2018.” In our off-the-record conversations at the time, we said ‘it’s like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, but for jazz’.

Universal Beings earned rave reviews across the board. It was a consensus year-end favorite (as seen in NPR Music, WIRE Magazine, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Rolling Stone, Vice, Stereogum, the list goes on…) that cemented McCraven as a must-buy album producer and a must-see live performer, and brought enough energy to our “plucky Chicago indie label” that we were able to move out of a closet and into an actual office.

**OUT NOW**

Techno Logic features Ben LaMar Gay and Theon Cross, and draws from performances in London (2017), Berlin (2024), and New York (2025), showcasing nearly eight years of developing rapport between the three musicians.

The People’s Mixtape has its foundation in a live recording from Brooklyn’s Public Records in January of 2025, where McCraven celebrated the ten-year anniversary of In The Moment with an intentional return to the improvisational language he developed during that album’s sessions. For the occasion, McCraven played with bassist Junius Paul and trumpeter Marquis Hill, both of whom are heavily featured on In The Moment; as well as vibraphonist Joel Ross, a regular collaborator of McCraven’s since the 2017 sessions for Universal Beings; and synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, the SML co-leader and International Anthem labelmate, who was playing with McCraven for the first time.

Hidden Out! is built off recordings from McCraven’s June 2017 residency at The Hideout in Chicago, where he improvised weekly with a revolving cast including bassist Junius Paul; Tortoise member, International Anthem labelmate, composer, and guitarist Jeff Parker; and SML co-leader, GRAMMY-award winning producer, and alto saxophonist Josh Johnson.

PopUp Shop was created from recordings of McCraven’s Los Angeles debut at Del Monte Speakeasy in 2015, where he took part in the King Hippo and Grown Kids Radio produced event RAWS:LA, and improvised with guitarist Jeff Parker, vibraphonist Justefan, and bassist Benjamin J. Shepherd.

The Off the Record vinyl LP and CD compilation is not just a collection of these four EPs, but a tactile document celebrating creative, communal, IRL moments of musical gathering.

...about IA11...

On December 2nd, 2024, we marked the ten-year anniversary of our first release.

With a full decade under our belt — ten years of commitment to a growing community of artists, and our original mission statement ("to vitalize demand for boundary defying music," among other things) — we spent a lot of time thinking about how we wanted to celebrate the milestone. What we kept coming back to was a desire to use the opportunity to revisit and revivify music and memories from our first decade, while keeping true to our ethos of always looking forward, all the way.

In that spirit, across 2025, we've rolled out a series of releases and events under the IA11 banner. Celebrating our eleventh year. Doing our best to retell essential, foundational stories from our past, while keeping our hearts and minds fixed on the present. Trying to establish new standards that can help carry our mission through another decade of work — and hopefully more.

We created an emblem for IA11 (designed beautifully by Aaron Lowell Denton) with a vibrating interpretation of a chrysanthemum as the central symbol. Aside from just loving the delicious golden nectar that comes from the leaves of this flower, for us, the image of the chrysanthemum resonates as a symbol of longevity and rejuvenation. Two of the driving intentions behind the IA11 effort.

In January we announced the first of our IA11 Edition LPs, revisiting some of the celebrated entries in our first decade of releases with a series of eleven vinyl and digital reissues. The eleven titles in the series include:

Rob Mazurek - Alternate Moon Cycles
Makaya McCraven - In The Moment
Ben LaMar Gay - Downtown Castles Can Never Block the Sun
Jeff Parker - The New Breed
Irreversible Entanglements - Irreversible Entanglements
Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson - Chicago Waves
Angel Bat Dawid - The Oracle
Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer - Recordings from the Åland Islands
Alabaster DePlume - To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1
jaimie branch - FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise
Makaya McCraven - Universal Beings

Starting in February, on the last Monday of every month at the Hungry Brain in Chicago, we've listened back to the most recently-released IA11 Edition LP and invited musicians to perform in response to the music. The next event is on Monday November 24th, and will feature a full listening of jaimie branch's FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise, followed by a performance by bassist Anton Hatwich with Rob Frye (sax, flute), Toby Summerfield (guitar), Luke Stewart (bass) and more TBA.

In July we released Gilles Peterson presents International Anthem, a double-LP-length compilation of tracks from our label curated by legendary London-based radio host, DJ, label head, and cultural impresario Gilles Peterson.

And on December 2nd, our ACTUAL eleventh anniversary, we celebrate with an event at our new Southside Chicago HQ The Land School (Rebuild’s and Theaster Gates' latest space-based project) featuring performances by Rob Mazurek with Matthew Lux and Mikel Patrick Avery (the ensemble behind Alternate Moon Cycles, the very first album in the IARC catalog) and composer/trombonist Kalia Vandever (who has new music coming via IARC in 2026).
